This is it. This is the big one. If you care at all about the internet, about not having it be dog slow for AO3.org but wicked fast for, I don’t know, FoxNews; if you care about one size fits all, and paying for bandwidth should be like paying for electricity, not like paying for individual cable channels, where you have to pay extra for the stuff you really want, then please, PLEASE, right now, GO HERE and file a public comment:

fcc.gov/comments: Protecting and Promoting an Open Internet

Tell the FCC what you think. Tell them you are a citizen of the internet, and that the internet is just plumbing, and AT&T and Verizon should not be profiting extra for providing what should simply be like water, gas and electric: utilities. That they should be allowed to black out portions of the country just until they get around to putting in pipes there.

Please, please, file a comment now. Create a text file for submission and click on Submit a Filing on the left hand side. You want to comment on Proceeding Number 14-28.

ETA: the FCC opened an email inbox that will send comments to the same public filing system, I believe: “Chairman Wheeler is encouraging the public to share their views now. He intends to have rules of the road in place before the end of the year to protect consumers and entrepreneurs. He will be listening, and your comments will help inform the final rules.

Please send your thoughts to openinternet@fcc.gov.” I would include full name and address, since that’s what is required in the form.
