I just saw your post about Hugh Scott and people asking for his books – they’re nearly all out of print but a lot of them are available secondhand on Amazon Marketplace (UK, anyway). (Thanks for the memories, too, The Gargoyle has been one of my favourite books for a very long time)

Thank you! I have been trying to direct people towards Amazon UK, but I wasn’t sure how readily available they were. The Gargoyle was one I read as well, (I just saw your comment) and I’m glad it held up with later reading! I’m always worried about looking back on books I enjoyed as children and finding out they were actually not as good as I thought they were.

Fwiw, people overseas might be able to order from Amazon UK – when I lived in Canada I bought from the UK Marketplace a lot (mostly because amazon.ca is a) shockingly expensive and b) had hardly anything on it). Although you might need a UK bank account, I’m not sure.

I’ve definitely had that feeling of oh man, I’m gonna reread this book I loved as a kid! And then the accompanying sadness when it just doesn’t hold up. Or you realise that there are some really questionable ideas in there that has your adult self wincing to read.

I wonder who has the rights? I’d love to have them as eBooks.

I’m living in the US just now but retain my UK amazon just so I have a means of shipping things around the UK to friends without having to pay international postage. But buying from the UK Amazon marketplace to get stuff over here has proved to be expensive in terms of shipping. The book might be 0.01 pence but shipping was something insane like $40. So it all depends on who is shipping it to you I suppose!

I’m not sure who has the rights, but given that all of his author stuff is currently being managed by the Scottish Book Trust who still has him listed as belonging to Walker Books who as near as I can tell haven’t made the leap to e-formatting (and nor do they have him listed as an active author). It’s a shame too. So much good literature is being lost to the modern age because older publishing houses either don’t want or can’t afford to upgrade their staff training for e-formatting. (I’ve trained for both, it’s bally expensive)

Bookdepository does free worldwide shipping and has a wide mix of stuff. (Big book nerd here who used to work in a bookstore before Amazon wiped us out.)
