do you mind explaining what’s happening in that last panel after bucky says ‘no’?

In case I’m not the only one who read the left hand side of the panel badly (the light blue outline is Bucky looking downward and he’s lit from behind). My brain keeps wanting to interpret his bun/topknot as some kind of monster mouth facing the other way.
