okay, obviously, I have to explain because SOME PEOPLE have never seen Neko Zamurai, the movie/tv series precursor to Neko Ninja, and don’t understand that Japanese feudal society was (historically, accurately, obviously) completely and utterly obsessed with cats, and this one in particular:

So much so, that when master swordsman Madarame Kyutaro:

is tasked with killing the demon cat, he takes one look into her fuzzy face and is struck dumb with cat love and cannot do it. He absconds with her and, with the aid of friendly cat store lady, sweet cat-donut lady, kindly cat café owner (did I mention the entire town is obsessed with cats?), and his cat-loving soup-dispensing friend, he learns how to care for Tamanojo and, in the process, sheds some of his grumpyface attitude toward life.
Because cat is family. No cat, no life.
Each episode is graced during the opening with a full ten seconds of Tamanojo just sitting there blinking at the camera. No text or credits. Just one very cute cat.
