I am So. Angry. That I never made this connection before.
Sam Wilson. Was named after Uncle Sam. Goddamn literally.
During the War of 1812, a man named Samuel Wilson from Troy, NY operated a meat packing company and was contracted by the government to supply rations. The meat was packed in barrels, made locally so they were distinctive to the area, and stamped when they were inspected; initials to signify the name of the company, and that they were United States property.
But since a lot of the meat was sent to troops who were from the area around Troy, the soldiers recognized the barrels and knew the man personally. He was apparently a well-loved older gentleman, because everyone called him ‘Uncle Sam.’ (Calling older men in a community ‘Uncle Whatever’ was very common back then.) The local soldiers began saying the meat was from Uncle Sam when they saw the US stamp, and it caught on and moved up the ranks and into the public’s notice.
The rest was history, obviously. There was even a congressional resolution that recognized Samuel Wilson as the ‘progenitor of America’s National symbol’. (x)
Fucking Captain America’s sidekick is Uncle Sam……couldn’t just call him the goddamn Eagle or name him Justice McFreedomfucker, had to go deeper for that shit I hate myself for knowing this and being unable to unknow it.
Sam Wilson and his meat packer legacy…..
