bridge-agent:

I think the current kerfuffle in the marvel fandom owes a lot to the fact that most of the fandom hasn’t read the comics. That allowed for the mental creation of a Bucky Barnes that is unrecognizable if one HAS read them–a deeply damaged, non-functional man who doesn’t want to hurt anyone, and is more likely to cringe or weep than fight, so it’s really shocking to those who believe in that model to see Bucky shoot someone at all, let alone at point blank range.

To those who’ve read the comics, that’s not even remotely surprising. They’ve seen it before, especially when it’s people who’re trying to harm Steve. You harm someone he cares about, you die, and the only people who can stop him are those people he cares about.

The Winter Soldier isn’t a separate personality that can be expunged from Bucky. The Winter Soldier is Bucky and Bucky is the Winter Soldier. That doesn’t change. What changes are his goals. His methods, not so much, just degree to which he uses them and with situational checks and balances in mind.

If it WAS someone other than Tony that he was initially aiming at, then Tony is between him and his target, and the only way he knows Tony is as a guy who’s siding with people who are trying to destroy him and Steve. He’s not his friend, he’s an obstacle or an enemy.

Bucky isn’t fandom. He cares nothing about Tony except stopping him. From his POV, why wouldn’t he shoot him? Something bad has clearly happened and he’s focused on removing a threat. He will do anything to protect Steve, and to a just slightly lesser extent, to survive. The only thing surprising here is that fandom is surprised. You saw the Winter Soldier in action in CA:TWS.

They were really clear in interviews, and the comics are equally clear–prewar Bucky is gone. He retains elements of his personality, but he’s not the same guy. Not only is Winter Soldier Bucky not a cinnamon roll, he never was. He’s a complex person who makes rash decisions and will risk certain death for the people he wants to protect–like jumping between Steve and a tesseract weapon in CA:TFA.

Thing is, the guy who he is now, he’s awesome, too. He’s an guy who makes mistakes because his heart overrides his head, kills more freely than Steve would like but is very, very good at it, is intensely loyal, and has many lovable qualities. In other words, he’s a guy with both flaws and positive traits, which is WAY more interesting than a perfect cinnamon roll. Fandom just doesn’t know him, yet. Well, except the folks who’ve read the comics.

ALRIGHT LISTEN

finally I’ve sorted (with help, because oh my god thanks for no ??? good screenshots????) Bucky’s new sniper piece and YOU GUYS:

This is a M249 Light Machine Gun.

This is !!!!! SO RAD !!!! FOR RECOVERED BUCKY!!! for so many reasons:

First of all, the M249 is a belt-fed, gas-operated American-make machine gun.  It’s a most importantly for Bucky a throwback weapon, because it fires in a similar manner to his M1941 Johnson Rifle from the War.  The M249 fires with an open-bolt, meaning it will provide the accuracy of a sniper rifle BUT the power, velocity, and volume of a machine gun.  It fires 5.56 NATO (.45mm) cartridges, and can feed off both linked rounds AND other magazines, meaning the user could swap to an M4/M16 rifle magazine in a pinch (incredibly useful in the field).

Also, this motherfucker is HEAVY, approaching 25 pounds when loaded, and as we can see from the new spot, it’s also been retrofit with an M4 50-round magazine (can be seen over Bucky’s left forearm when he’s standing behind Steve), most likely pushing it into the 30-pound range.  A weapon this heavy, with high volume fire, is a testament to Bucky’s physical endurance in both carrying and operating it, as the kick-back on a weapon this size is disruptive at best.

Additionally, even the disadvantage of this weapon caters to Bucky’s strengths: the M249 is known to heat up quickly along the barrel when in use, but, GUESS WHAT: metal hand steadying the barrel deals with that.  Bucky, as always, adapting!!

Finally – the M249 has been in use by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in every major military conflict since 1989.  It’s primarily used for high-volume cover fire, but allows for sniping accuracy as well.

So consider: Bucky picking up a weapon that’s defensive in purpose.  A gun that yes, can be used for sniping but is almost always used to provide cover for other fighters.  A gun that can, at highest volume, discharge approximately 10 shots a second, but operates almost like the weapons he’d used in WWII.

Bucky at Steve’s six, seventy years later, choosing a weapon of defense in his own way.  It might not be a shield, but he’s come a very, very long way.

From Captain America #11 – Ed Brubaker

A comprehensive mental evaluation of Codename: Winter Soldier was conducted over the course of the past week. Diagnoses are varied, but most in Dept. X Science Team believe that his mental state is becoming unstable. In the three years since he was awakened from stasis, it appears his mind is seeking to fill in the holes of his memory, or possible rebelling against the implanted programming he received originally. The subject has recently begun to exhibit more than usual curiosity, even to the point of questioning orders from superiors, and once in the past month, he attacked a fellow operative, nearly killing him. On interrogation he could not explain his actions.

One theory is that just as he has reflex-memories which allow him to be such an effective operative, he may also have a deeply buried sense of who he was, or at least of what kind of person he was. As such, this deeply buried idea may be causing him mental stress and triggering turmoil in his thoughts. Another theory, which is more disturbing, is that he may actually be remembering his previous life, though in small pieces only. It is therefore our recommendation that Codename: Winter Soldier be kept in stasis between missions, and then he undergo Mental Implantation at every awakening. We believe this will correct his instability issues, so he can continue to be of use to Department X.
