A History Lesson From the Captain America Fandom
Sulagna Misra takes a look at the debate of the historicity of Captain America, and reports back on her findings.
Lots of linkages to historicallyaccuratesteve that ties pieces together. Lovely if you want to know at least one person’s take on who Steve Rogers, man born in 1918, could be like.
“I hate this doctor.”
How are you gonna get Cap interested in fighting Ultron when he should be consumed with finding Bucky?
The fact is Ultron is a clear present danger, and Bucky is in the wind. And we do mention the fact that that’s his sort of primary thing but he’s also working with The Avengers too. We’re not ignoring it but he definitely has to deal with a mad 8-foot robot… ‘cause that’s one of those things, you know, you put if off, and it just gets worse.
Very important
no, not without you
But Bucky undergoes transformation in each of his two appearances; The First Avenger is worth re-watching just to observe how well Stan fleshes out Bucky with relatively little material to work with. He starts the movie as a grinning ladies’ man and ends it as a sniper who can barely smile, and by The Winter Soldier his ability to smile is long gone. That the filmmakers chose to end the movie on Bucky’s visage is all you need to know that it’s his story we’re really concerned with. Cap is Cap is Cap. But Bucky is fluid, an evolving character whose struggle is not with the world in which he lives but with the man that world has forced him to become. Bucky Barnes is the one undergoing the Hero’s Journey, not Captain America.
Bucky Parallels The First Avenger vs The Winter Soldier (the bridge scenes in particular kill me).
I’m 95, not dead.
This is mostly just for my reference, and also because I’ve seen some reblog tags from this post which are curious on exactly how old the Avengers are. For clarity’s sake, the ages mentioned here are calculated as of the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (May 2014) and are strictly MCU canon.

8) Steve Rogers b. July 4, 1918 (95, adjusted to 29) [1]
9) Sam Wilson N/A
10) Bucky Barnes b. ?? 10, 1922 / 1917 (92 / 97, adjusted to ??) [2]
=======================================================
[1] Steve crashed the plane and was frozen on May 6, 1945 (26). He regains consciousness on April 24, 2011 which amounted to 66 years. Therefore, his adjusted birth date is July 4, 1984 (1918+66). The Battle of New York is on May 4, 2011, just 10 days after he woke up.
[2] The SHIELD file states Bucky’s birth year as 1922, while the Smithsonian exhibit transcript states it as 1917. The exact birthday month is obstructed / not provided, so I’m defaulting it to January. Also, I haven’t the faintest idea how to adjust his age since he fell on May 5, 1945 (23 / 28), because he would be going in and out of cryo whenever they need the Winter Soldier for the last few decades.
More good timeline meta. I do find it interesting that they are making Steve and Natasha (and maybe Bucky) age contemporaries.
