Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“You think
Pierce’s come down and the assassin is here to kill him, but the reversal is
he’s here for instructions. This sort of structure, where someone comes in to a
place thinking they’ll be alone and somebody is already there, happens 3 times
in the movie. It is slightly symbolic of the fact that HYDRA’s been there all
along. Fury’s there when Steve comes in, Winter Soldier is here, and Fury’s
there again later in the cave.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“This
is a really lovely scene between these two which really highlights the platonic
nature of their relationship. There’s actually love there that’s like a brother
and sister love. They’ve also changed each other. She’s blown all of her covers
in large part because Steve has showed her
that maybe you shouldn’t live such a morally murky life. She’s trying to push him towards Sharon.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“The hardest thing to do as an actor is to act without dialogue. Sebastian Stan did such an incredible job with this character, gave him so much life, complexity
and texture without a lot of dialogue. He conveyed incredible menace just through movement for a good 60
minutes of the movie. It’s always difficult to convey emotion without speaking.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“In the MCU where you’ve got these dynamic visual characters like the Hulk, Iron Man and
Thor, how do you introduce a guy who glides and talks to birds? All of us pushed for this militaristic
approach to him. Basically, he is a human fighter jet. Sam gets some of the
more dynamic sequences here which is great because it’s really our hope that in
the movie he doesn’t come across as a sidekick, he comes across as a partner to
Cap. It was on the agenda of everyone to make sure that he occupied his own
story space in the movie and didn’t feel like an afterthought. This mission
would not have been accomplished without his contribution.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“This is a very important moment in the movie ‘cause again this plays into the reality of what the stakes are for our characters. Natasha is genuinely afraid. This is the second time she’s been shot by him. If it was not for Steve, she would have been dead.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“This is the revelation of Bucky. We wanted to do it when the whole world was falling in on Steve. To find out that the one thing he thought he knew was not even true was like having the final rug pulled out from under him. The worst thing that could happen to Steve is “my best friend, who I thought was dead, is a killing machine”. It’s so rare that you have such an emotional connection between a hero and a villain. Best friends turned into mortal enemies is in a way even more tragic.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“This scene benefitted greatly by Chris and Scarlett’s working history together. You really see their chemistry and that they know one another so well. I remember workshopping this scene in Scarlett’s trailer with them, making adjustments. I think they tweaked the ‘practice’ line, they wanted this line in. [They provided] a lot of the bantering back and forth, sort of playing off of each other. It’s great ‘cause it gives them nice energy and spark. And what’s also interesting about this scene, it’s the first time since The Avengers where you get to see two of the characters from that group behaving like friends, or at least behaving in an intimate fashion, and having a conversation where they’re talking about things other than saving the world.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“If you’re not a comic book fan, when you think ‘Captain America’, you probably think ‘jingoist’, a propaganda piece. But if you know the comics, every time something happens in the world, he gets to address it: the hippies, the civil rights movement, the Watergate. And our MCU Cap missed all that, he missed 9/11. So he gets to address where we are now without having seen what forced us to make these decisions. He did not have the same slow descent into the cynicism that we all had over the last 40 years. He comes out with fresh eyes.
One of the great things in the comics that we hoped to replicate in the movie is that his reaction is never the sort of knee-jerk old man conservative reaction you would think the man dressed in an American flag would have. He exemplifies the spirit of America, not a party, not a government. He’s never going to fall on a political line. He stands for an ideal and he stands for principles that are translatable across the board. What he is against in this film is subversion, subterfuge and lies, that line between freedom and fear.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“We’re heading towards the midpoint of the movie where in conspiracy thrillers you figure out who’s after you and what the truth is, so you can turn around and go forward. And we hit upon the idea that the secret place they went to find the answers to was where Steve was, in essence, born, where it all began. This scene of Steve seeing himself in the past was a very talked about sequence. We all knew we wanted to intimate some sort of memory from him. Using footage from the previous film seemed like a cop out, so we were trying to find a new way to express again this identity crisis he’s going through, and also to remind the audience of what this place actually was. So we tried to externalize it, use these ghosts running through the location so that you get context for it. But also that moment where he stares at himself is a very sad moment. Again, it’s, “What have I lost and what have I gained?”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:
“The kiss was something that we contemplated, “Can we do it? Can we not do it?” It’s such an old trope, and it was also the debate of whether there would be romance between them for real in the movie. Eventually we decided not to do it as: (a) there is no time, and (b) it sort of sells both characters short that the only reason to have Black Widow is so that there could be sexual tension. But kisses are always fun, plus it leads to the conversation [later in the car] which really cracks Steve open.”
