Bucky is to Hydra…

I never tested all that well on standardized tests, but I used to love the old SAT analogies. Puppies are to Dogs, as Kittens are to Cats!

So, here’s an analogy. Sort of. Bucky is to Hydra, what the Avengers are to… blank. To the Accords, to the US, to the combined governments of the world, to SHIELD, to Secretary Ross via the UN. 

Rewatching Captain America: Civil War the other day, I realized that the complete and utter control Hydra had over Bucky, to use as a weapon however they chose, at their complete discretion, that this is actually what Secretary Ross would prefer the Avengers were. Subject to the UN panel (but preferably subject to government control). The Winter Soldier is the extreme example of that control. 

Secretary Ross has that pesky problem of free will to contend with. Hydra neatly removed that problem. 

It’s chilling through, at least to me, to see the slippery slope that Accords would/could set in motion.

A comprehensive mental evaluation of Codename: Winter Soldier was conducted over the course of the past week. Diagnoses are varied, but most in Dept. X Science Team believe that his mental state is becoming unstable. In the three years since he was awakened from stasis, it appears his mind is seeking to fill in the holes of his memory, or possible rebelling against the implanted programming he received originally. The subject has recently begun to exhibit more than usual curiosity, even to the point of questioning orders from superiors, and once in the past month, he attacked a fellow operative, nearly killing him. On interrogation he could not explain his actions.

One theory is that just as he has reflex-memories which allow him to be such an effective operative, he may also have a deeply buried sense of who he was, or at least of what kind of person he was. As such, this deeply buried idea may be causing him mental stress and triggering turmoil in his thoughts. Another theory, which is more disturbing, is that he may actually be remembering his previous life, though in small pieces only. It is therefore our recommendation that Codename: Winter Soldier be kept in stasis between missions, and then he undergo Mental Implantation at every awakening. We believe this will correct his instability issues, so he can continue to be of use to Department X.

“This is another moment where Redford really makes the villain human, he’s got a point. That’s the thing: authoritarianism is rearing its head again. The movie tests philosophy. He’s a bureaucrat who is not much further than the bureaucrats we’ve all come to know in our lives. His thinking is just an extrapolation of a kill list, which is if there are ten individuals deemed dangerous do you have the right to kill them? What if there’s a thousand? Well, what if there’s ten thousand or if there’s a million? At what point, if we can effectively psychologically profile people, then we have one? And what are the constraints of that profile? Where do you draw the line?”

Pierce’s come down and the assassin is here to kill him, but the reversal is
he’s here for instructions. This sort of structure, where someone comes in to a
place thinking they’ll be alone and somebody is already there, happens 3 times
in the movie. It is slightly symbolic of the fact that HYDRA’s been there all
along. Fury’s there when Steve comes in, Winter Soldier is here, and Fury’s
there again later in the cave.”

Someone else already talked about the iv drip in Bucky’s arm in this scene, but can we talk about the medical readouts? Sadly, I couldn’t find a single really clear screenshot – if anyone with the BluRay has better quality pics, I’d love to see them.

Overall, the displays are fairly cryptic, missing a bunch of what I’d consider important medical information, like clear displays for blood pressure and oxygen saturation. I think the big number in the lower left of the screen might be pulse rate – it ticks up fairly rapidly to 130 when the electrodes come down and Bucky panics. God knows why you’d want to display pulse rate to one decimal place, though, so it might be something else entirely. I don’t know what the other big number next to it is supposed to be, either – that one holds mostly steady somewhere around 60.

The screen to the right scrolls through a CAT scan of Bucky’s brain. Unfortunately I can’t get good enough resolution to tell you whether there’s visible brain damage there.

I’m most interested in the labeled markers on the diagram of Bucky’s body in the third pic, though, the ones I circled in red – because WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SHIT, and what do you want to bet it’s implants? We see Bucky with his shirt off, so we already know there’s no injury there (well, there might be broken ribs, I suppose), and he doesn’t have visible electrodes attached, either. So. Implants. Trackers. Chemical reservoirs. Remotely triggered self-destruct mechanisms.

Because the goddamn metal arm just wasn’t enough of a violation of Bucky’s bodily integrity.

The unsung heroes.

That was one of the most horrifying, painful, beautiful parts of the movie.  So many of them weren’t prepared, so many were administrators who had no clue that the STRIKE teams had turned, let alone that a killing machine like the Winter Soldier was on the loose.  

So many of them died.

And yet none of them hesitated.  Despite the propaganda Pierce had unleashed, despite their orders, despite everything, they still responded.  Their sacrifice, their heroism – they gave the last full measure of devotion, and I can’t imagine that Steve wouldn’t attend the memorial service, even if he had to use a wheelchair or a cane because his own wounds hadn’t finished healing.

“Captain’s orders” indeed.
