I feel like there needs to be some kind of post for MCU fans on How To Write About Africa because I feel like there’s a lot of people out there who want to write about Wakanda and T’Challa but are worried about being problematic and that makes me sad because there’s SO MUCH GREAT meta to be had about T’Challa and Wakanda but at the same time there’s a lot of legitimate concerns about perpetuating racist stereotypes and yeah.

T’Challa and Wakanda could be such a great way to introduce people to amazing sci-fi concepts that people should know

This is SO needed.

It’s so easy to be like ‘just try it!’ but the problem with this website is that people don’t think its okay for people to make mistakes. I’ve gotten messages from people who want to write about T’Challa/Wakanda but are nervous about how their work will be perceived and its so sad.

We really need to gather some people who’d be interested in writing a nice little info post!

I’ll start

Water Music

saidthewizard:

Today, June 25th, is the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philipp Telemann.

He was one of those rare musical figures who spanned an age of growing cultural upheaval and successfully adjusted to the changing demands of the times. His earliest works reflect Heinrich Schütz, his late phase looks ahead to Mozart – a most gifted composer, and one who explored his gifts against the decided wish of his family. Telemann was meant to study law but defied expectaions to explore the world of music, and in the process much to enrich it.

Here is one of his most popular works, called Water Music (Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth), an orchestral suite centering on the river Elbe which was – and to some extent continues to be even today – the life blood of the North German port city of Hamburg. In 1723, when Telemann wrote this, he had for two years been music director of the city’s largest churches, a job so well paid that he even turned down an offer to succeed J S Bach as Thomas-Kantor in Leipzig. This shows him to have been a man not perhaps relentlessly determined to place artistic interests above  material values. All the same, he must be remembered as one of the greatest composers of the baroque era.

Wassermusik – Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth TWV 55

1. Ouverture (Grave – Allegro)
2. Sarabande. Die schlafende Thetis (The Sleeping Tehtis)
3. Bourée. Die erwachende Thetis (Thetis Awakes)
4. Loure. Der verliebte Neptun (Neptune in Love)
5. Gavotte. Spielende Najaden (Water Spirits At Play)
6. Harlequinade. Der scherzende Tritonus (Jocular Tritonus)
7. Der stürmende Aeolus (Aelos, Raging)
8. Menuet. Der angenehme Zephir (Pleasant Zepyhr)
9. Gigue. Ebbe und Fluth (Low and High Tide)
10. Canarie. Die lustigen Bootsleute (The Joyful Watermen)

Musica Antqua Köln is conducted in this recording by Reinhard Goebel.

Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman script is (deservedly) getting torn to pieces by tumblr at the moment for being very sexist and filtering Diana’s superhero journey through the lens of a male character, and more importantly, appealing almost entirely to a male audience as well.

Whedon’s script would still be a sexist mess even if it had been written by a fan as a fanfiction and posted on AO3. I mean, I doubt as many people would care about it, in that case, and there wouldn’t be the worry over how close it came to being the actual movie, but it would still be just as sexist.

So keeping that in mind, I don’t really see how so many people can be upset over Black Panther fans telling people to stop putting white-centric stuff in the Black Panther tag. If you can understand why having a Wonder Woman movie that prioritized Steve would have been an offensive disaster, you should have no problems understanding why having the Black Panther tag full of meta speculation on Bucky, or GIF’s of Martin Freeman, is also an offensive disaster.

Wonder Woman is for women. Black Panther is for black people. Everyone can enjoy them, but anybody who decides to enjoy them in ways that disregard the perspective of the people they are meant to be heroes for, is fucking up. Whether they are a paid professional or an unpaid amateur doesn’t make a difference in this regard. Diana does not exist for male consumption, and T’Challa and Wakanda do not exist for white consumption. If you can’t enjoy one or both of the movies while also respecting that, then I would sincerely consider taking a long moment of self-reflection to ask yourself why. There is no shortage of male heroes and no shortage of white heroes. If you want a hyper-advanced society for white male characters to play in, use Asgard.

It’s that simple.

I’d very much like to punch a feminist.

So apparently last year the National Park Service in the US dropped an over 1200 page study of LGBTQ American History as part of their Who We Are program which includes studies on African-American history, Latino history, and Indigenous history.

Like. This is awesome. But also it feels very surreal that maybe one of the most comprehensive examinations of LGBTQ history in America (it covers sports! art! race! historical sites! health! cities!) was just casually done by the parks service

This is really great??

I would like to add that this isn’t odd.

The Park Service is more than just Yellowstone and the Everglades, the National Park Service has custody over hundreds, if not thousands of historic sites, houses, and battlefields. It’s part of their mission to interpret US history and make it available to its citizens. They have completed studies for African American history, Native American history, women’s history, and more.

It’s sad that people let this aspect of the Park Service fall through the cracks.

But man are they rising to the challenges of the time now!

Seeing white gays have meltdowns over darker colors being added to the rainbow flag because “it already includes everybody” is like hearing white people shout ALL LIVES MATTER.

that’s actually… not true? lmao race and sexuality BELIEVE IT OR NOT are two separate issues, the flag representing sexuality. BLM and “all lives matter” are both about race… so….

The point of my post was just proven.

Nah this is bullshit. The Pride Flag was established years ago and it was meant to have the colors of rainbow. You know what colors the rainbow doesn’t have? Brown and black, but I guess physics must be racist. The logic of “we must include brown and black to represent all skin colors” but they’re not including a white stripe, just a black and brown one to fill their PC quota. It’s total bullshit. When you take the Pride Flag and you modify it to add colors, it’s the same as when you take “Black Lives Matter” and modify it to “All Lives Matter”. This has nothing to do with white or black gays, your reasoning is stupid. The pride flag is about sexuality, not skin color. That’s why it’s a rainbow.

Also this new pride flag thing is a marketing scam. Look at the website for the flag. It’s all focused on sales and marketing and if you click anything it immediately asks you for money. The company that’s doing this Pride flag thing is a marketing company, Tierney. If this was about making PoC feel included in the community, where is that reflected on this website? Where are the LGBT PoC biographies? The historical precedent to gay flag? Not there at all. It’s a marketing strategy targeted at PC culture and those who have a need to call everything racist. This is a brand, not a movement. This flag is copyrighted and someone gets paid every time you use it. This is just a thinly veiled attempt to manipulate people’s emotions and all of you are falling for it.

Nobody wants to feel racist, and now for a price, you don’t have to because these people have mastered emotional blackmail. LGBT organizations are gonna feel pressured into buying and displaying this new flag and so will everybody else, because whoever doesn’t, get the finger pointed at them and called a racist. Congratulations, you Tumblr PC assholes, have managed to reduce racism to a marketing strategy.

Jesus Christ…

Okay, Darren, this is – what? – the third time I’ve been made aware of your unabashed stupidity on here?

Let me start off by saying that I had my own reservations about the flag because of one key detail that I didn’t come across until yesterday which completely changed my perspective on it: the flag was specifically created for the Philadelphia LGBT community, full stop.

That’s literally it. This isn’t Philly trying to make their new Pride flag the Pride flag. This is Philly altering their Pride flag to better reflect their LGBT community.

It’s supposed to be a testament to Black and Brown (Latinx) people in the Philly gay community and bring attention to how they have been treated in recent years. (x) (x)

Over the last few years, there have been reports about gay bars in Philly actively turning away and mistreating local Black LGBT people. (x) (x) (x)

The Mazzoni Center – which is the regional LGBT health organization in Philly – has been consistently accused and guilty of discrimination in its services to   Black and Brown Philly citizens. (x) (x)

More recently, the chair of the Philly Mayor’s LGBT commission – a Black Trans woman named Sharron Cooks – was removed from her position for “creating an unwelcome environment.” (x) (x) (x)

Now, with all that out there, let’s move on to your own bullshit:

The logic of “we must include brown and black to represent all skin
colors” but they’re not including a white stripe, just a black and brown
one to fill their PC quota.

…you really are dense as fuck. No one’s filling a “quota”. And furthermore, did it ever cross your mind that adding those two stripes could maybe have something to do with the fact that QPOC don’t feel included in our own community because White and White-passing gays (Looking at you) are – what’s the word? – racist?

I said it as soon as this flag popped up on my dash: This is gonna give White Gays more invalid reasons to bitch and moan about QPOC being pandered to. Lo and behold, I was right. Sit down, coz it isn’t about you and it’s not about any of the shit you’ve managed to cobble together on your keyboard.

When you take the Pride Flag and you modify it to add colors, it’s the
same as when you take “Black Lives Matter” and modify it to “All Lives
Matter”.”

The fuck it is. First of all, the Pride Flag used now isn’t even the original design as it’s missing two colours that Gilbert Baker originally included – turquoise and hot pink. The flag has been modified countless times by LGBT communities across different cities and countries for various reasons – so, no, altering the flag does not equate to shouting/writing “All Lives Matter” over “Black Lives Matter”.

Just about the only thing you actually have a decent point on is the advertising company working with Philadelphia on this. I’m immediately shady of any corporate entity being involved in LGBT issues but, again, this is for Philly – not the entire LGBT community worldwide or even countrywide, really.

But again, you have to fuck it up.

Nobody wants to feel racist, and now for a price, you don’t have to
because these people have mastered emotional blackmail. LGBT
organizations are gonna feel pressured into buying and displaying this
new flag and so will everybody else, because whoever doesn’t, get the
finger pointed at them and called a racist. Congratulations, you Tumblr
PC assholes, have managed to reduce racism to a marketing strategy.

It’s funny too, coz I also said that less socially aware gays would use this as an excuse to say racism doesn’t exist in the LGBT community coz, hey, there are two extra colors on the flag.

LGBT communities exactly nowhere are going to feel pressured into doing anything. The flag has been altered dozens of times and never once has any such alteration (aside from reducing it from eight colours to six) caught on to replace the flag as it already exists. Way to sensationalize this though.

You can stop defending White Gays now. You already look like one so it’s not like they won’t fuck you.

Go back to answering cringe-worthy anonymous asks from yourself and underaged gays calling you “daddy” and falsely referring to yourself as a doctor. Oh, and plugging your SC on literally every post you reblog. Like wow, dude, you must really be getting nothing if you’re that desperate for random dick pics.

wow can y’all believe Darren still out here acting a fool after i ripped every strand of hair from his head one by one? that is really wild
